How to install our software
This document will go through the basics of installing our software on your computer. As our programs all use the same install process, this document will be relevant to whatever you decide to download.
Step 1 - Find the Software
While browsing through DanZ Games, you'll come across various software offerings. They may be freeware or shareware. If something is freeware, then you can download and use the software for free, with no restrictions. If it is shareware, then what you are downloading is a demo of the software. It may be time-limitted, certain features may not be available, and you may be stopped from continuing after you complete a few levels. Refer to the games download page for information on the type of game it is. Once you've found a game you want, use your screen reader to activate its download link.
Step 2 - Downloading the Game
Once the link is selected, depending on the type of browser you are using, different options may be available. In Internet Explorer 6, you have two options--open or save. Earlier versions of Internet Explorer had different wordings for these same two options--Open from Current Location or Save File to disk. What you choose depends on what you will do with the setup/install program later:
- If you simply want to install and play the game now, and can easily connect to the Internet to download it again if necessary, choose open. This saves disk space because the game installer will not permanently be stored on your computer--only the actual game will
- If you have intentions of burning the game on a CD to install on other computers, choose save. Save is also useful for keeping a backup copy of the setup program on your computer. You would want this copy, for instance, if the game becomes unavailable on the Internet, or your Internet time is expensive, so downloading it again would not be feasible.
For new users, choosing open is the easier alternative, since you do not have to save the file to a specific location, and find it later. If you don't have experience with saving files, it is advised that you choose open.
Step 3 - Game Install
Once download is complete, what you have on your system is an install or setup program. If you opened the file directly, the installer will be automatically launched. If you saved it to disk, you'll have to locate and run the installer manually. Regardless, you'll end up at the same spot. In brief, to navigate the installer's screens, you'll want to use the tab key to move between the various options, and spacebar to select an option. More detail follows.
- The first thing the installer does is ask you if you really want to proceed with installing the game. Assuming that you wouldn't have wasted your time otherwise, choose the Yes option by pressing spacebar.
- The next screen appears. Choose next by pressing spacebar
- The license agreement then appears. This is a standard document which can be read with your up or down arrow. Your screen reader's Read All command should work as well. If you agree with the agreement, press tab to move to the group of two choices that you have--agreeing or disagreeing. The default is to disagree, so if you want to agree and continue the install, press the up arrow. Then, tab to the next button and activate it
- Now, you'll be asked to choose the location for the game files. It is suggested that you leave it at the default unless you have reason to change it (for instance, a different hard drive for installed programs). If you do want to change the location, you can manually edit the path, or tab to browse and press spacebar to activate it. It is beyond the scope of this tutorial to fully explain the browse option, however some notes are in order. You will be in what is called a tree view. You can use the up or down arrows to find folders, the right arrow to open/expand a folder, and the left arrow to collapse a folder. You may have to use your screen reader's sayLine command to have it tell you if the folder you are on is opened or closed. Once done navigating, tab to the OK button. However, as was already said, without good reason it is suggested that you do not change the path or press the browse button, so just tab to Next and activate it
- The next screen is very similar, but this time it is for specifying where in the start menu the game should be found. Again it is suggested not to modify this, but to just tab to, and activate, the next button
- The next screen's default button is Install, and you'll want to activate this button. Additionally, you can press tab twice to land in an area describing your selected install options, if you want to verify them
- The game will now be installing. Your screen reader may say "cancel button", because the only option now available is to cancel the install. Wait until this button is replaced by a finish button, and activate it.
- The game is now installed!
Step 4 - Playing the Game
We're almost there. There are two ways to run the game--from the desktop or the start menu. To run the game from the desktop, hold down the Windows key (the key to the right of the left control), and press M. Then, continually press the first letter of the game name until you arrive at it, and press enter. To find the game in the start menu, which is useful for also finding game documentation and other features, first press the Windows Logo Key. Then, press down arrow until you arrive at programs and press enter. The game will be at the bottom of the program list, so hit up arrow to traverse the list in reverse until you find the game, and press enter. All of the game options will now be available by using your up or down arrow and selecting one with enter. Enjoy!
